Several injured in explosion at aluminum plant in Newnan

CBS46 has learned that several people have been injured after an explosion at an aluminum plant in Newnan.

The explosion happened around 9:15 a.m. in the casting area at Bonnell Aluminum Extrusion Company.

One person was taken to Atlanta Medical Center by helicopter. Two others were taken to a hospital by ambulance. Two other people were injured but were treated on the scene.

According to their website, since 1955, the company has been one of North America’s leading manufacturers of custom aluminum extrusions.

Plant authorities said it is too early to speculate how the explosion happened.

Bonnell said they take the safety of their employees very seriously and they have temporarily shut down their operations while they investigate.

Blast kills 2 in 1956

According to an article in the Ocala Star-Banner on December 27, 1956, a blast at the same plant killed two people and injured four others.

That explosion started in the smelting department and was felt 15 miles away.

According to the article, plant officials theorized that the explosion was caused by dumping wet (from recent rain) scrap aluminum into the smelting pot with molten metal.

CBS46 will have more information as it becomes available.
